phonetic symbolism

Phonetic symbolism means certain similarities in pronunciation that help recognise the meaning of words even from the languages not known to the subject(person). For instance,in an experiment in India, students in Englsih medium school were first presented orally with individual English words followed by their equivalents in German,Spanish and Japanese languages. The subjects never learned or knew these languages.Still results indicated that they could recognise Spanish and German equivalents more correctly than Japanese words. The fact indicates that many Indian languages(Marathi,Hindi,Gujarati,Telugu)are derived from Sanskrit language.Hence it is easy for a Marathi speking subject to understand Hindi.Even South Indian languages(Kannada,Telugu,Malyalam)are derived much from Sanskrit.Hence some of the words from these languages can be understood by people from North and Central India.
